Lake Buchanan
Nestled in the rugged limestone terrain of the Texas Hill Country, Lake Buchanan stands as a shimmering blue contrast to the region's iconic oak-covered hills and granite outcroppings. Located about 60 miles northwest of Austin, this 22,000-acre reservoir offers the clearest waters in the Highland Lakes chain, reflecting the area's dramatic sunsets and star-filled night skies. The surrounding towns of Burnet (population ~6,500) and Llano (~3,300) serve as perfect Hill Country bases, offering wineries, barbecue joints, and charming boutiques between water adventures.
There are three towns close to Lake Buchanan. Burnet is 15 miles to the east of Inks Lake. Kingsland is 6 miles south and Llano is 15 miles to the west. Lake Buchanan is located 60 miles northwest of Austin and 95 miles north of San Antonio. It is about 200 miles south of Dallas and Fort Worth and 200 miles west of Houston.

Lake Buchanan's unique Hill Country setting creates ideal conditions for distinctive water sports. Kayakers and paddleboarders can navigate through submerged oak forests when water levels are low, while wakeboarders carve through waters framed by rolling hills. The lake's famous granite cliffs at Fall Creek provide breathtaking jumping spots for thrill-seekers, and the clear waters make it a favorite for scuba divers exploring underwater rock formations.
Lake Buchanan embodies the laid-back yet adventurous spirit of Hill Country lake life. Visitors can enjoy live music at lakeside wineries, take sunset cruises past flooded ghost towns, or join the annual "Hill Country Splash" waterski tournament. The lake's multiple access points through parks like Canyon of the Eagles showcase the best of Hill Country scenery, where water recreation meets the region's famous wildflowers and wildlife viewing opportunities.
